Serve as a Leader
Apr 08, 2020I often talk about the S in the LISTEN to Lead Method which is to Serve. As a leader we serve our people, our mission and our business. I have had clients push back thinking "to serve" people is somehow something you would not do as a boss. It always makes me so curious. But the thoughts I hear are related to doing the work for others, having less of a back bone, being a people pleaser. What I offer, however, is that it means providing a service and the service you are providing is belief and support.
Think of a time when you had a great server at a restaurant. How they walk you through the menu; outline an order sequence that they, or other customers, have enjoyed; offer suggestions and answer any questions to help you make your best choice. The server typically does not make the decision for you and they certainly do not eat the meal for you or define your experience- they influence your experience. They believe in what they are offering and they believe in your ability to make choices that you will enjoy. They use their team, knowledge and experience to support you in having an experience aligned with both the restaurant's mission and your expectations as a customer.
So how can you serve your people with belief and support? Believe they can be the best, and achieve the goals you set forth. Believe that they want to be the best. Support their success by setting clear goals, expectations and consequences and holding them to the achievement of them. Help them to see their own way out of challenges. Challenge inaction that is not getting results. Define the mission and work together to be in service of that mission everyday.
Invest small bites of time to provide authentic caring 1:1 support and focus individually on objectives, challenges, celebrations, consequences, ideas for improvement and innovation.
